The Chick Forbes 2 mile handicap The annual race was normally held in November but has now been moved to May. The race is to commemerate one of Scotland's best known runners who ran for Victoria Park in the 50's and 60's and then Irvine AC where he was a well respected runner and coach. The race is restricted to Irvine Running Club members and invited guests. |
The race is held at the beginning of December. Runners and cyclists may have their views about who’s faster, but one Ayrshire race has put that friendly rivalry to the test for decades. The 'Cyclists vs The Harriers’ race, started by Irvine YMCA Harriers and Fullarton Wheelers CC, has been held every Sunday (apart from the Covid cancellation) before Christmas since 1959. The event, now organised by Irving Running Club, will pit cyclists against runners on a five-mile course on soft ground, starting and finishing at Irvine Sports Club. The route follows paths around the club and the town, as well as a cross-country section over Irvine Moor. The course also contains obstacles to make the challenge as fair as possible. Entry is just £7.50 with a good selection of festive prizes for the category winners and various spot prizes. |
